On Thursday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Ghasemi strongly condemned the US move for compiling and publishing a report containing “baseless allegations” against Iran, underscoring that Washington “lacks the required competence and legitimacy” to present such reports against other countries.
The US State Department published a report on June 27, describing Iran, along with China, Russia and Syria as among the worst offenders for human trafficking.
Ghasemi maintained that such “unilateral” and “biased” reports are based on “politicized double standards”, with an aim to “tarnish the image of the Islamic Republic of Iran”.
“These baseless accusations come despite the fact that Iran’s Constitution, based on Islamic teachings, has one of the most progressive laws in regard to human dignity,” Ghasemi stressed, adding “Iran’s parliament has passed a law on fighting human trafficking in all its forms and has predicted certain punishments for perpetrators of such crimes.”
He went on to add, “the root of human trafficking should be seen in the unilateral, interventionist and aggressive policies, as well as occupation, wars of attrition, terrorism and genocide in a majority of which the US military and security forces and some of its allies are involved.”
“The responsibility of the US government is evident,” Ghasemi said, adding “Washington should not and cannot acquit itself by leveling wrong and baseless allegations against other countries.”
The Iranian diplomat further called for identifying and punishing the perpetrators of such inhumane policies and measures which have exacerbated human trafficking in the world.
